Help us preserve working market barrows
Traditional street trader barrows have been an iconic ingredient of London’s street markets for over a century and a half. However, changes to trading conditions over the past few decades have led to a dramatic decline in their numbers. Where there were once 80 barrows in Brixton street market, we now have six regularly appearing on the street. The same can be said for the majority of London’s street markets.
We have completed the restoration of four traditional fruit & veg barrows, and these will be a feature on Brixton’s streets for decades to come. Now we are looking to restore two, possibly three, more flat barrows. These help the market porters shift tons of supplies and market stalls without the noise and danger of powered vehicles, keeping the market safe and pollution free.
Our skilled carpenter, Mari Reijnders, is proficient in the restoration process, so we are appealing to people like you to help fund the next phase of this historic project.
